Fostering Lifelong Love for Reading

At Hartland International School, fostering a love of reading extends far beyond the classroom. We understand that in an age of digital distractions, cultivating a child’s intrinsic motivation to read is more crucial than ever. Inspired by research-led initiatives, we advocate for viewing every child as a reader, regardless of whether their interest lies in fiction, non-fiction, or digital content.

Mary Rose Grieve, our dedicated Librarian and Co-Chair of the Great School Libraries Campaign, emphasises that reading widely benefits children academically, socially, and emotionally. Our approach aligns with the global Reading for Pleasure (RfP) pedagogy, prioritising choice, autonomy, and community engagement over rigid reading incentives.

Parents play a vital role in reinforcing these habits. At Hartland, we encourage families to read to their children regularly—regardless of age—and to model positive reading behaviours. Whether browsing book award lists like the Carnegie Medals or simply discussing something they’ve read, parents’ involvement helps demystify reading and embed it as a daily pleasure.

By supporting children in selecting books that genuinely interest them and showing that reading takes many forms, we strive to build lifelong readers who approach literature with curiosity and confidence.
